Paintings of horses and camels show how the Aṉangu world changed with the arrival of explorers, pastoralists and missionaries. Explorer and surveyor John Carruthers visited the cave in the late 1880s, and was the first European to refer to the place as ‘Walinynga’. People associated with the nearby Ernabella mission, such as the Reverend RJB Love and W MacDougall, recorded visiting the site on several occasions between 1941 and 1945.
